Papers chiefly consist of correspondence and scrapbooks. Most of the correspondence consists of letters from Lyon G. Tyler, Jr. to his mother in Virginia written between April 1943 and May 1946. One letter dates from 1930. Wartime letters originate from Chicago (Ill.), Raleigh (N.C.), San Francisco (Calif.), and beginning in March 1945, from aboard ship in the Pacific Ocean, then the Philippine Islands, Shanghai (China), and elswhere. Two scapbooks (1944-1946) contain newspaper clippings, sketches and paintings, military records, ephemera, Asian currency, and photographs. Artwork depicts naval vessels and personnel as well as scenes in the Philippines and China. Miscellaneous items include military records and memorabilia, and Tyler's reminiscences (ca. 2000?) entitled "My War? As I Remember It."
